On making new discoveries

I have to confess I'm now thoroughly addicted to blog hopping. It opens up so many new worlds to me that would otherwise be missed; new discoveries also. My latest discovery is Karl Blossfeldt,

courtesy of http://treeshadowmoon.blogspot.com/ a corner of the world I often visit with much interest.

I was simply blown away by what I saw;

Macro photography has never really been 'my thing.' Even less so, specific photographs of flowers or fauna - I had an elderly aunt who took quite appaulingly blurry photos of such like which she regularly subjected on our entire family at regular intervals throughout my childhood - but the 'apparent' simplicity of these photos simply blew me away. What a talented man to be able to see and represent such beauty using equipment we'd now consider primitive and outdated. Blossfeldt apparently believed that 'the plant must be valued as a totally artistic and architectural structure' perhaps bringing into play his training as a craftsman at an Iron Foundary in Magdesprung during 1881-83. Growing up with a metalwork teacher as a father with a specific interest in old ironwork, Blossfeldt's vision certainly strikes a chord in my own psyche; how lovely to have stumbled across him in such a serendipity manner..

  1. Hello there, so glad that you liked Blossfeldt too, his photos are mindblowing, aren't they?!

    I bought a big, good quality hardback book of his work printed by Taschen, at only 10 euros (new) as part of the Tashen 25 offers they did last year. Maybe they're still available.

    He was quite a foxy man too, judging from his photo ;)

    Thanks for linking to my blog as well, most kind of you :)

  2. *Grin* I did notice a certain dapperness about Mr Blossfeldt that was rather pleasing on the eye!

    Thank you so much for introducing me to his work, I've just trawled Taschen's online catalogue and it seems they still have the book in stock - yipee! :-)
