A Dilemma of the Crafting Kind

...So I broke my felting needles last week, the only two needles I had in my possession, which of course, made everything in that particular crafting department grind to a halt. Undeterred I promptly ordered replacements from the wonderful Wingham Wool Works

http://www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk

and decided to teach myself how to knit socks while I waited for them to arrive. Utterly serendipity I know, but, well, I had this spare wool kicking about in my yarn stash and found a pattern matching the wool type for sock knitting using two needles instead of the usual four, in the bargain bucket of my local wool shop, so figured it'd be as good as time as any to give it a go.

Which I did;

and am still in the process of doing as I type....using the wrong size needles naturally, as I forgot to check what I'd need when I bought the pattern. Anyway, that's neither here nor there - the thing is, I've got to the difficult bit; the part that requires seperating stitches on different stitch holders and shaping heels and whatnot, and ummmm, it's scary stuff! AND what's more my felting needles arrived this morning - twenty shiny new barbed needles with sharp pointy bits with which to stab myself and break willy nilly, so I'm in a bit of a dilemma what to do - do I continue to knit in martyr like fashion until I've sussed the ancient mystery that is sock knitting or resume felting and bleeding over my little stone runes? I think I'll go and make a cup of tea and ponder on it some more.....

  1. I'm all in favour of runes. You could felt a Kenaz for inspiration ;)

  2. Seems like you've been busy! I say go where your inspiration quickens... the socks won't run away, they haven't got any toes yet! ( I know, it was a bad one!I really shouldn't try wit, I'm just not sharp enough!) :)

  3. Ha! Well I decided to go with the rune thing in the end and promptly discovered how difficult it is to make one rune a similar size and shape to another! So at the moment I have a 'little and large' one. This morning I'm experimenting with cutting the end off of one to see if I can salvage it enough to more or less match the other. I think in future I'm going to concentrate on 'one off's' which seems like a lot less hassle!

  4. Well I'm glad you solved that particular dilemma! Very pretty yarn btw. I've yet to attempt socks, but I do hear them calling me!

    Thanks for popping over to my blog - I love discovering new people this way! Have a great week xxx

  5. Frankly, as soon as my needles arrived I would have pulled the knitting off the needles and tried felting that. Much more satisfying than knitting socks, LOL

  6. It's been made worse by the fact that my mother (who spins) has now given me a bag of assorted wool tops - I'm thinking fairies, toadstools, stone circles, all manner of daft things which is really making the ancient art of sock production look less and less inviting by the day!

  7. Maybe sock knitting will beckon you back in the winter months! Have you seen the dovegreyreader blog? A 'Devonshire based bookaholic, sock-knitting quilter who is a community nurse in her spare time'. She had a blog 'stall' at the Port Eliot festival (books, folk music etc etc) and it seems right up your street.

    Kit and Kaboodle is a really fascinating blog, and if there's a more intriguing and curious list of labels in the blogosphere... I've yet to find it!
