If like me, you adore the ghost stories of M.R James, the antiquarian and possibly the best teller of scary tales England has ever known, you might like to listen to this chilling homage, sung by Andrew King and Autumn Grieve who together with Tony Wakefield form the backbone of The Triple Tree. Andrew King is a well respected visual artist and something of an expert on English folklore and ballards, having worked with both The English Folk Dance and Song Society and The Sound Archive of the British Library.
Someone elsewhere on the net in reviewing the complete album (Ghosts) suggested that King's voice 'really captures the essence of these stories. His voice sounds almost dredged from the past of old England' which I think sums up perfectly his contribution to the homage paid to M.R James.
I have a couple of other songs of a similar nature which I might expand on in later blogs, I appreciate that some of them are perhaps a little macabre and not to everyone's taste but hey, that's half the fun of reading other people's blogs; that opportunity to explore things we might otherwise not be privy to...
Chilling song. I must confess to not having heard of M.R.James - must go google him now. Thanks for the introduction.
ReplyDeleteThe BBC did a series of his stories a few years back read by Christopher Lee. If you search Youtube you can find a few of them there. I think there were shown, in best English tradition around Christmas time.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I'm never certain whether or not it's better to read them for yourself though - M R James was a master of suggestion rather than being overtly descriptive, which of course gives free reign to the readers own imagination - always the best tool to use when trying to creep people out!
What a haunting piece, its has got me intrigued , now off to you tube to check out some more of 'The triple tree" think im a fan already! Thanks Kate :-)
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome Aaron Paul :-)
