Sunday Whimsy

I have a friend in Israel....well actually, he's a Mexican living in Israel....who has recently been introducing me to music with a more Latino sound. I confess, a lot of it is quite alien to the stuff I would usually seek out for myself, but occasionally I hear little gems like this which I thought I'd pass on. It's belongs to the Portuguese Fado genre, which to quote Wikipedia;

'In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. However, in reality fado is simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain structure. The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word saudade which symbolizes the feeling of loss (a permanent, irreparable loss and its consequent life lasting damage).'

I don't speak Portuguese but I think maybe the sense of sorrow,yearning and longing in this particular piece can be understood without the listener necessarily understanding exactly what it is she's singing about.....it's a shepherd boy though, in case you were wondering!
